I Hope You Slept Soundly
Written for orchestra
During the double-brood cicada emergence in the summer of 2024, many found that a sustained chorus of both broods could be up to 89dBa (for reference, the federal traffic noise threshold is 67dBa, and OSHA's permissible exposure limit to sound is 90dBa for an 8-hour work day). It made me think of something Joseph Saunders said in his interview on Alie Ward's Ologies podcast, where he talked about his career in macro-photography. He mentioned that it started from a personal connection to reptiles, saying that he "looked upon them as an example of resiliency; an example of how to be tough, how to survive, how to not just survive based off what other people perceive as your limitations, but also how to survive when everybody else is against you". |
